2012 Fashion Rewind...2013 Fashion Experiments

Happy new year my friends! Welcome to 2013! It has been a lovely year already for me. Maybe because I am still on vacation :) Either way, it has started off quiet and peaceful, just as I was hoping.

Last year at this time, I did a post about my 2011 Fashion Experiments and what I wanted to try in 2012. It was so fun, I thought I would do it again! Let me start with the two things that I did not try/accomplish. I had wanted to get into a real non-tankini 2 piece bathing suit. That didn't happen. I slacked a little too much at the gym and didn't make it, but this is a new year and I'm ready to try again! I also have wanted to try colored tights. Well, I wore them in the 80's and 90's and I was hesitant to try again. I got "crazy" and bought white and grey tights and loved them. Mr. Thrifty told me that doesn't count. Sigh. Well on 12/30/12 I purchased fuchsia tights on sale at Old Navy so I will be starting back to work on Monday wearing colored tights for the new year.

In 2011, I chopped my hair off and had a pixie cut for the first time in my life. By the end of the year, I was sick of it and started growing it out. I wanted to have shoulder length hair by the end of 2012 and I did it! Short hair has been fun and easy for me over the last 5-6 years, but I am ready to try long again. Thanks to Pinterest, I have found a million new ways to style it and I'm excited to try them all. I never ended up with the pink highlights like I wanted, but I did accidently give myself blue streaks when I left the bleach on too long. My daughter said that I should have blue all of the time. I was not as excited about that. :) I can't wait to see how my hair will look at the end of this year.
hats, hats hats!!

Along with growing my hair out, I was excited to wear hats in 2012. As a teenager, I wore hats all the time, but I guess I outgrew it. As a busy mom, I have embraced the hats as a way to cover up dirty hair and still look cute. This is also the first year I've worn hats to the beach. My poor blonde scalp and fair forehead are thanking me for it. Mr. Thrifty's parents brought me two hats from their trip to London, so now I am all stocked up! Look for hats to feature prominently in my 2013 fashion diaries....just don't judge my dirty hair!
So comfy and cute! Wish I could wear them everyday!

Finally, I was hoping to "embrace my inner 50's housewife" and wear full skirted dresses this year. I did and I loved it! For us curvy girls, the full skirt it a blessing! You can show off your waist, but let the big booty be covered up. :) These dresses are not only super comfortable, but they make you look/feel classy even if you rolled out of bed late. Multiple times this year, I received huge compliments on the days I was wearing one of my dresses and most of the time I hadn't even tried to look cute. I am currently on the prowl for more of these lovelies! And of course more cardigans to wear with them!
So there is the 2012 fashion rewind...now what is on the horizon for me for 2013?? I already told you that I am finally embracing the colored tights and it looks like 2013 is going to be a year of color for me.

Snagged from Clairol's Facebook page

Even without Clairol telling me that emerald green was going to be the color of 2013, I had already unofficially made it so. Looking over my purchases from after Christmas sales, I realized that i had purchased 2 green tank tops, a dress, a statement necklace, belt, and bracelet. Towards the end of 2012, I had picked up a green jacket and a few other pieces. I am loving looking like a leprechaun  My Holy Grail though is a pair of emerald green heels like the ones in the picture. All the ones that i have found in the past have been way too expensive or 6 inches high. Here's hoping that I finally find the perfect pair!

Colored denim....so pretty but so scary!

Here is a trend that I wore as a much younger girl...colored denim! I love all the new colors and cuts that are out there. I am hoping to get up enough nerve to try some this year. Maybe a pretty mint pair or emerald green to stick with my color of the year! I can guarantee you that you will not find me in floral denim though. No one wants to see that many flowers on my booty. I am going to leave that trend for my daughter and her friends.:)

Pastel blouses...cute or grandma like??

Yet another trend that I have been slow to embrace because it reminds me of the frilly blouses that my mom wore in the 80's. They were cool then, but should they be brought back? I wasn't sure until I saw the cutest girl the other day wearing a mint green blouse. She looked gorgeous! It got me thinking that maybe the 80's moms were on to something. I'm hoping I can score some cute vintage ones at the thrift stores...or maybe i will rummage through my mom's closet!

chambray = fancy for denim

Last, but certainly not least, is the denim shirt. If you Google it, use the word "chambray". That's what they are calling it these days. In the early 90's during my high school and then college years, the denim shirt was the staple of my wardrobe. I had long sleeved, short sleeved, no sleeved. You name it, I had it. I wore them with my cool black jeans and braided belt. I wore them layered under everything and as a cover over all sorts of outfits. I am excited for this trend to be back...if only I had kept mine! I am currently on the hunt for a new favorite...again hoping to find a "vintage" one in my thrifting adventures.

Looks like I will be wearing a lot of green this year! What about you? What are you going to experiment with this year? Stop back soon and see how I do. I will be sharing my fashion diaries here along with where you can find the items and how little I paid for them. :)

Happy new fashion year!!

peace, love, and green shoes,
chrissy
