Consignment shops, clearance racks, and friends! Oh my!

Good morning friends! It is a beautiful Saturday morning and I've had thoughts brewing, along with my coffee, about what to share today. Since I didn't post yesterday, you get 2 tips today. Hurray!

So the first thing for today is a point of clarification. I realized that I had been saying that these were tips for thrifting, but then posted in my Fashion Diary that half my items where from clearance racks. Oops! I am not only an avid thrifter, but also a clearance rack junkie. There is not much better than walking right into a store and purchasing their over priced items for a fraction of the regular price and being able to brag about that. I've been know to even leave tags on to show my good deals. But you shouldn't do that. It's obnoxious. ;)

So going forward, let's say that you can apply these tips to thrift stores, consignment shops, garage sales, and clearance racks whereever you go! Some of my favorite clearance racks are found at Old Navy, Kohl's (gotta love the 90% off rack), and Charlotte Russe. My favorite consignment/secondhand store is Plato's Closet. Do you have one in your area? They only take name brand items! Fantastic!

Here are some clearance rack finds! The t-shirt was on clearance at Old Navy for $5 then was another 30% off. The skirt was on clearance at Kohl's. I think I paid $5.99. The belt came off a dress I purchased at Kohl's on the clearance rack for an event. I have only worn the dress once, but the belt has definitely made it worth the money! Scarf and boots are from a little second hand store I found when I was in Pennsylvania.

Alright, tip #2 for today is Take a Friend! Maybe this is normal for you to shop with a partner. Since I've had kids though, if I get a chance to shop I like it to be a solo event because I get a few minutes peace. :) However, taking a friend is a great way to get in some hang out time, but also helps in the selecting process. I happened to marry a man who may love thrifting more than me AND who has a great sense of style. He is always on the look out for new things for me to try like I am a Barbie or something. LOL

There have been so many times that I would have skipped over some things and not tried them because they were out of my comfort zone. Had I not had my thrifting buddy or another friend with me, I may have missed something great! The other great thing is you can be that person for someone else. I LOVE seeing my friends and family in things I've helped pick out. It's like a little piece of me is walking around with them. (mushy I know!)

This dress joined my closet because some fantastic girlfriends made me try it on and the converse as footwear were the idea of said Mr. Thrifty (my hubs)

So here is how we work it. Mr Thrifty and I usually seperate as soon as we hit the store. We collect items on our own for awhile and then after about 15 minutes or so, we meet back up. We go through the items and show them to each other and see what makes the cut. This also helps with over spending and having someone say "do you really need another black sweater??". This process continues for a few more rounds until trying on time. I ALWAYS need another opinion during trying on time because I have a messed up sense of what looks good on me (therapy moment right there). Again, many times things have made it home because my partner has convinced me.

Who is your shopping partner? Mom, sister, friend, hubby? Do you have someone who can be real with you? Your next assignment is to find a shopping friend who wants to join this fun journey with you!

have a great weekend loves!

peace, love, and cute shoes,
~chris

  1. I couldn't agree more about having that one shopping buddy that gets me out of my comfort zone and forces me to try stuff on that I would NEVER pick out on my own. Unfortunately, we now live many, many states apart, but I'll be doing some shopping with her when I'm home for the holidays! I also agree that I often like to shop alone. There's very few people I like to take with me when I shop, but I'm usually glad I have someone along for the ride when all is said and done. It's more fun that way.

  2. I usually go shopping with my sister. We usually head out to like Target, TJ Maxx or Marshalls. My sis and I absolutely love Kohl's clearance :D and we too have a Plato's Closet though quite honestly, I haven't been there in a while.
